The Berlin Wall was a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic tarting on 13 August 1961, that completely cut off (by land) West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and fromEast Berlin. The barrier included guard towers placed along large concrete walls,which circumscribed a wide area (later known as the "death strip") that contained anti-vehicle trenches, "fakir beds" and other defenses

In 1948, following disagreements regarding reconstruction and a new German currency, Stalin instituted the Berlin Blockade, preventing food, materials and supplies from arriving in West Berlin. The United States, Britain, France, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and several other countries began a massive "airlift", supplying West Berlin with food and other supplies. The Soviets mounted a public relations campaign against the western policy change.
