Goodbye Lenin is about a son and a daughter keeping the secrets of Socialism and democracy at peace with each other. The son and the daughter later visit their mother at the hospital, Alex again meets the girl from the demonstration, who is revealed to be Lara a young nurse from the Soviet Union taking care of his mother. Alex becomes smitten with her and asks her out. The two soon begin dating and develop a close bond. She helps the Mother that suffers from alzheimer to not find out that east and west Germany have came together. She would find this to overwhelming to understand and would cause her heart to be in another Trauma and sent her back to the hospital. The son keeps this away from her as long as possible and when she asks to watch the news he creates a fake podcast with his friend to fool his mother. They host a birthday for the mother and everyone that is asked to participate have been enrolled to play a character that won't mention when east and west Germany have been separated. o this end, he, Ariane and Lara revert from the gaudy decor of the west to the drab decor they previously had in the bedroom of their mother (who is now bed-ridden) in the family apartment, dress in their old clothes, and feed Christiane new Western produce from old-labeled jars.
