To what extent did the newly created United Nations help the situation in the Middle East in 1947? How did they fail?
The United Nations took stability over the area and set up an eleven-man commission to examine the problem. Their solution was to divide Palestine in half with one part for the Jews and the other for the Palestinians. The Arab nations that surrounded Palestine made it clear that this plan would not be acceptable. Regardless of this – and aware of world sympathy for the Jews in the aftermath of World War Two - the United Nations went ahead with its plan. The General Assembly approved the partition in November 1947. During the Israel war of independence Britain lost favour within Israel and decided to hand off the problem to the UN. The first thing the UN does is suggest a Partition. The response was divided. The Jews were happy and supported this, but the Arab's were angry. All throughout 1947 there were arab attacks on the Jewish people. Many worried that once the mandate ended they would increase.
